Robots, Drones, and Hardware Startups competing at TechCrunch Shenzen HARDWARE BATTLEFIELD 2019

Smartex’s knitting defect detection technologies aim to prevent factory defects at the source.

Smartex is a behind-the-manufactuing-scene startup in a 33 Billion textile industry that has a 5% defect rate. They provide a subscription model for manufacturers to run their computer vision software and cameras that can detect textile defects, stop the machine, and allow the operator to locate the defect. And with more data, allowing them to pinpoint and prevent potential sources of defects.

So far, they have companies that have seen 5x in savings than their current defect rate.

Though uncommon and B2B, it’s great to be reminded that savings and defect prevention is a big business problem, and you can charge in proportion to the savings you create.
A good question brought up by the judge, “Why are these industries delayed in innovation? When you go to textile factories in China, they have machines from Germany” Smartex responded that it’s hard to meet the technical knowledge for an industry like Textile and compared to other consumer products, innovation cycles are very long. As an example, the conference for textile leaders and innovation happens only every 4 years and they only meet to share things that already exist.

They are in Shenzhen to customize the services they want to offer their clients in Italy and Portugal, and by next year, plan to explore solutions that can be built or offered in China.
